Chess for Chumps

Design and evaluation of an adaptive e-learning system utilizing mastery learning, Bayesian knowledge tracing, and adaptive feedback hints to teach fundamental chess concepts to novices.

In this paper, we explore the design and implementation of an adaptive learning system for chess instruction. The system is designed to help beginners learn and master the fundamental concepts and skills of chess through a series of carefully designed exercises. By breaking down the learning content into smaller knowledge components and providing targeted feedback and hints, the system aims to support learners in their journey towards chess mastery. While the system focuses on basic chess concepts, it lays the foundation for future developments in more advanced chess instruction.
