Modeling Flow state in an Action-Roguelike

Modeling a player's Flow state in-game.

In this research project, we explored the concept of flow in gaming and how it can enhance the player's experience. Inspired by the game Vampire Survivors, we developed a game that allowed us to collect data on players' gameplay and their perception of challenge. By analyzing this data, we trained a machine learning model to estimate the player's flow state. Our goal was to dynamically adapt the game to keep players in the flow state, creating an optimal gaming experience. We conducted the research with a group of participants and obtained valuable insights into the correlation between challenge and emotional response. Overall, our findings contribute to the understanding of flow in gaming and provide a foundation for future studies in player modeling.
